Holiday on Ithaca island
It's not easy getting to Ithaca, known by the name Ithaki by the Greeks. It's a days' travel from mainland Greece with bus and ferry. Ithaca is one of the smallest islands of the Heptanese in the Ionian, and is neighbour to one of the largest islands in Greece, Cephalonia. In Summer the population explodes from around 3500 inhabitants to around 10,000 which weighs heavily on the roads and beaches of the island. The people that choose to holiday on Ithaca are not the usual Greek holidayers, looking for sun and sea, but travelers that want to discover and learn something about the culture of the place they are visiting while they are at the beach under the mediterranean sun. Over the past few years, Ithaca has become the place for the great city escape and thus has a growing population of northern Europeans and British, but not too many. Ithaca is still very Greek and its' traditions continue to lay deep roots in its' growing young. Ithacans have a great pride in their island and especially the often disputed subject in regards to the island being home to Ulysses and the Odyssey.
